During the fall and winter of 2000 and 2001, interested Brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. that resided in Alamance and Chatham counties, conducted meetings to determine if there was enough interest to start an Omega chapter in the Burlington area. After several meetings, the Brothers decided to pursue a chapter charter for the Burlington area. The district and international offices were contacted regarding the requirements for starting a chapter. At that time, some of the interested Brothers were members of surrounding chapters as well as Brothers moving into the Burlington area.
On March 16, 2001, the group of interested Brothers from the Burlington area sent letters to the 6th District office and International Headquarters requesting consideration for a chapter charter.
On May 29, 2001, thanks to the hard work of the area Brothers and correspondence with 31st Sixth District Representative Dr. Melvin Pinn*, the area Brothers were granted a chapter charter. The chapter was given the name Delta Lambda Lambda and the chapter number is 907. There were 11 charter members, later to be known as the “Nobel 11”:
Barry Alston* (Zeta Psi ‘69)
Dwayne Chambers (Tau Omega ‘99)
Alex Dawson Sr. (Chi Phi ‘62)
Alex Dawson III (Mu Psi ‘86)
Arthur Enoch* (Psi Delta ‘75)
Early Kenan (Tau Psi ‘72)
David Maynard Sr.* (Tau Omega ‘49)
Elton McCray (Epsilon Epsilon ‘72)
Tony Roper (Sigma Mu ‘86)
William Sellars* (Tau Omega ‘85)
Larry Simpson Sr. (Lambda Kappa ‘78)
On June 24, 2001, the 32nd Sixth District Representative, Walter Funderburk*, and his district staff conducted the chapter chartering ceremony in Burlington, NC, to present the chapter charter to the Delta Lambda Lambda brothers. After the chapter chartering ceremony, the Delta Lambda Lambda brothers conducted their first meeting to develop the chapter bylaws, goals, objectives, and mission statement. In addition, chapter officers were elected, chapter dues were established, and timelines were developed for achieving the fraternity’s mandated programs.
For over 20 years, the Delta Lambda Lambda chapter has served the Alamance County community out of its Burlington location. Some of the activities performed include: Achievement Week programs that take place the week of November 17th each year, talent hunt competitions, hosted participants at a Boys’ Camp, memorial programs, the support of the local NAACP and College Education Fund, mentoring and tutoring to area youth, voter registration drives, health fairs, adopt-a-family events, and the giving of more than $20,000 in scholarships.
